Employers and New Years Resolutions

Employers and New Years Resolutions

As each New Year comes along people make resolutions to lose weight and be more active. A little more exercise to get toned up. But they seldom continue with the ideas for many different reasons. Maybe due to not seeing a fast enough change, not getting support or feeling starved due to not eating healthy.

Employers could help them with their goals by giving them a break time for a short but fast paced walk even to walk up and down a flight of stairs. This not only encourages exercises, it gives them a break from work which is needed to get a fresh start with clearer thinking.

Employees’ work and health balance will increase the bottom line of the business or workplace. Employers should encourage a work-health balance to keep employees well being. A healthy worker is much more productive than one that is not doing their best due to thinking of their health issues.

If a worker is concerned about a health issue it may cause them to have an accident, due to not giving the job all their attention. When someone is thinking  I’m fat and need to do something about it, they are not doing their best work. They are preoccupied by how to get in shape, subconsciously getting in shape is first and foremost on their mind. This can lead to an accident and disability claims.

Disability claims in this day and age are high and may be in access of $15,000 annually. Obesity claims last up to 2 months longer than the recovery for a more fit person.  The workplace should have an effective wellness plan which encourages everyone to get fit and stay fit. This would save the business a great deal of money and time missed due to health problems.

By reducing or rotating excessive workloads and employer will gain more respect from the employees and they inturn will be more productive. The same is true about allowing time to attend professional classes on  getting and staying fit. Employers can gain a more healthy workforce just by giving the workers a paid pass to a gym class.

Employers should lead by example, they should be the first to get fit or quit smoking. They could start by furnishing some healthy snacks or fruits for the workers. Even company meetings could have healthy drinks and fruits instead of rolls or doughnuts.

Smokers should be encouraged to quit. Most work places now are smoke free and the employee that is craving a cigarette is not giving their all to the job they are paid to do. Smokers tend to be more short of breath and if they have an excessive work load they most likely take an extra amount of time doing it. Thus the bottom line for the workplace is smaller.

Obesity, smoking and non healthy workers cost the business world millions of dollars every year. As an employer you should be taking every opportunity to encourage all the work force to get healthy and stay healthy. You should set the example and take a few extra steps to get your workers on the way to a healthy body. Healthy employees lead to increased productivity and decreased disability claims

Employers are the key to getting a healthy work force and keeping them healthy. They alone are responsible for the bottom line of the company. Keeping a fit and healthy work force is one of the best cost saving plans they can have. Having programs run by the staff is maybe one of the easiest programs they could have. The staff is more likely to know the workers problems and be able to address them more accurately.

Fitness Matters: Enjoy journey and experience
From www.rochestermn.com by Shelly Greenfield

addthis_pub = ‘sngii’; addthis_brand = ‘Post Bulletin’;

This past weekend I had the amazing opportunity to compete again in the Fitness America Pageant in Las Vegas.

There were hundreds of beautiful fit ladies, nearly 600 competitors this year. With divisions of fitness, bikini, figure, model, and muscle, women from all over the world came to show their amazing physiques hoping to take home a trophy for all their hard efforts and preparation.

I wish I could say I came home with a trophy, but I can’t. Am I disappointed? You bet I am, but I have to keep it all in perspective. I competed in two categories, bikini classic which is divided by age, 35-44 years old, and looking for a soft, lean fit body, and the figure classic that is a more defined physique but still feminine.

I have to say, I have never seen so many amazing figures all in one place!

Most of us are busy mommies, with careers, hobbies, and excruciating schedules, but manage to put it all together to pursue a passion. It becomes a sisterhood like no other. We all know the dedication, commitment, and sacrifice it takes to get in the best shape of your life.

There is a place for everyone here, and there can only be one winner, and five ladies in the top five. Even if we don’t make those top spots, what matters is that we gave it our all, and we are our own personal best. By exceeding our own previous level of fitness, we walk away as winners, whether there is a trophy in hand or not.

A subjective sport is tough on the ego and the heart, but what I take away from this experience is what I tell my own clients: “enjoy the journey and the experience.”

We can all relate to that. Whether you are just beginning to pursue your fitness goals or in the heart of it all, you have to see it as a journey. There really is no ending to getting fit. You will have goals along the way, but there will never be an ending. Once you get to where you think you want to be, it’s time to set another goal, whether that is maintenance or another level bove where you are.

Health and fitness is a path, with some destinations and stops along the way. Sometimes there are detours, like family issues, health issues, injuries, etc, that slow you down. Dealing with what is in front of you, and getting back on track as soon as you can will help you maintain your focus.

I know for me, I had some over training issues and needed to take some downtime to let my body recover by getting rest, eating a well balanced clean diet, drinking plenty of water, and getting deep tissue massages. Taking time off was essential to get past this, but I also knew I was on a tight timeline and felt the pressure to get all my workouts in.

Others had much more serious setbacks. One competitor had the news two weeks ago that her cancer had come back, but she chose to press on with her passion and deal with the medical issues when she returns home. She is a woman of utter strength and mental toughness.

So the journey continues, and we all return home, and keep working at becoming our personal best. Take pride in what you accomplish with whatever obstacles you may have.

When It Comes to Weight Loss

When it comes to weight loss, it’s best to play safe

Last Updated Sep 2009

by Sophie Kelly
HUMANS can be very impatient. We like things ‘to-go’ and for them to happen instantly. We don’t like waiting around, especially when it comes to weight loss.
We all know what we have to do to achieve the hockey-stick-turned-sideways-look, but we still go in search of an alternative that’s easier and faster than the tried and trusted eating healthily/ exercise route.
The diet industry is now a multibillion-dollar enterprise, one whose existence depends on our failures. Research shows that 90 to 95% of dieters regain their weight loss. And once they do, they are back on the hunt for a new ‘eating programme’ as it’s now fashionably called, to get rid of their lumps and bumps ASAP. There are no official statistics for spending on diet products, but estimates vary from $40bn to $100bn in the US alone.
While most fad diets have reached saturation point in the last ten years, diet pills are having a bit of a revival.
About 30 years ago, amphetamine slimming pills were all the rage. But doctors discovered that they weren’t as fantastic as first thought. Little, if any, weight was kept off, while some of the women taking them became addicted. Research has now linked the pills with long-term health problems, such as heart disease and stroke.
Some US Food and Drug Association (FDA)-approved appetite suppressants are currently on the market for the long-term treatment of obesity, but they are only available on prescription, and those who take them are under strict supervision. So, the drugs fell out of favor with the world – until now.

Companies have fought back, and are now selling over-the counter diet pills. However, there is a problem. Not enough research has been carried out on most of them. The companies that create these pills generally have no idea how they are going to affect an individual after long-term use. In fact, whether the individual will keep the weight off is generally unknown.

The newbie to the market is a product called Alli which descended onto Irish shelves last April to much hype, and was even endorsed by some health experts. It is the only FDA-approved, over-the-counter weight-loss aid. Otherwise known as Orlistat, it works by absorbing fat, as part of a weight-loss diet, and can cause adverse reactions if taken without changes to your diet or lifestyle. Its manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, estimates that since its introduction, about 50,000 Irish people are already using the product.
Available to those who have a body mass index of 28 or higher, Alli promises to help you lose 50% more weight than if you were going it alone. And at a price of .38.08 for 42 tablets, it sounds like the miracle we’ve all been waiting for.
However, last week, Alli made national headlines once again, when The Irish Medicines Board (IMB) revealed that it has received six reports of adverse reactions associated with it. And the FDA in America is beginning to review the drug after it received 32 reports of liver damage, with six cases resulting in organ failure.
Not so pill-tastic now. Alli are standing firm though, and believe that if people adhere to the diet plan, they will be far less likely to suffer from any kind of compliant.
You may be thinking ‘OK, so I may not want something mainstream, chock-full of chemicals, but herbal diet pills have got to be good for you, right?’ And in some cases, sure, they are. But herbs, or the wacky baccy as The Mammy likes to call it, can be very powerful, and some prescription drugs are made from herbal extracts. Some herbs can interfere with other medications you may be taking, and can even be fatal, if not used correctly. So, the best thing to do before taking them is to get advice from your doctor.

Even with all the warnings in the world, people don’t seem to care. They simply want to know if the pills work for them, rather than looking at their diet. Some do, and some don’t, but I think Gillian McKeith was right

- you are what you eat.

Weight Loss Struggles of my Siblings
Our mother must have known  The Facts About Weight Loss.
As we grew up we were all thin, we done all the farm chores. Milking cows by hand, stacking the idiot bales(small square bales weighing up to 120lbs.) on racks being pulled behind the baler and in piles in the farm yard or in barns. With temperatures in the triple digits, especially in the barns. Some had tin roofs on them which raised the temperatures by at least 20° higher than out in the open. Our metabolisms were running very high. We never ever worried about losing weight.

When my oldest brother graduated high school (160 lbs) he got married right away. It must have been good for him as he started gaining weight. By the time he turned 20 he was weighing in well over 240 lbs. He became very lazy with all the extra weight.

He decided to start dieting, he tried many different fad diets which left him being constantly hungry. He would lose a few pounds the first week. Then every thing came to a halt, no more loss of weight. So he would give up. Then a few weeks later start another diet, starving himself until he was almost to week to get up and go to work. So he would start eating everything again which got him even heaver than he had been before dieting. He finally quit all dieting until he became diabetic at 34 years of age. The doctor then put him on a diet which he had to follow. The Doctor also said that the dieting may have contributed to him becoming diabetic. Well he is over 70 now, still diabetic and still over 210 pounds.

Next in line to graduate was me, I graduated at 165 pounds, 6 foot tall so I was considered at a mostly fit weight. Now 49 years later I weigh 165 and can still get into my graduation suit as well as my military uniform. I kept my metabolism rate very high all my life. I could eat twice what the rest of the family ate and never gain a pound.

Then my sister graduated and went to college where she too gained a lot of weight. She tried many fad diets with the same results as our older brother. She also became sick from the starving that the diets caused. The doctor finally put her on his healthy diet which she did not lose any weight but did not gain any more. Also 3 years later she became diabetic and the same doctor also told her it may have been from her fad diets earlier in life.

My younger brother graduated next went to college, got married and started his own business. He was shorter and weighed in at 150. He also could eat as much as me and never gain any weight. Now 40 years after graduating he weighs in at 165 pounds so is still in the near fit weight limits. He must also have know The Facts About Dieting.

Now the youngest brother, he was a little heavy in school, 175 pounds, 6ft. 1 inch tall. He played all the sports, football, track, even basket ball and was good in all of them. 4 years later got married and started farming. He did not have any livestock so the winter months were bad for him as he would eat till he was full and sit in front of the TV. He started gaining weight and would say it would get worked off in the summer while farming. It never happened, at 30 years of age he was over 400 lbs. His wife and he both decided to try the fad diets. He lose weight, 20 some lbs. in the first month, but that is where he would stay. He also starving himself like my older brother and my sister. He had to quit that when a kidney gave out on him. Now with a different doctor than the older brother and sister had. He was also told that the starving diets may have caused the kidney failure.

If only they would have known the Facts About Dieting found in the The New Accelerated Diet Plan they would be much healthier today. The youngest brother finally looked at the Facts About Dieting and decided to go for the program. In just 13 months he lost more than half his weight and weighs in at 195 lbs. and has kept it off for the last 8 years.
